Star Parties in Hubbard

Star Parties

Hubbard and Whitney
Some Saturday evenings

Star Party, Hubbard

Join us, bring the family, and tour the skies of Central Texas!

Lake Whitney State Park offers a "Night Sky" interpretative program. Participants have the opportunity to spend the evening exploring the night skies by telescopes provided by Texas Park and Wildlife. A retired National Park Service astronomer will be identifying stars, nebulas and galaxies.

The program will be held across from the day use area next to the boat ramp. Some chairs will be provided however, participants are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets on which to sit.

Be sure to bring binoculars or your own telescope if you can. Assistance will be available for new telescope owners. To reduce light pollution, red lights are preferred rather than bright flashlights or headlights.

After hours entrance permits can be purchased with exact change at the self-pay station across from the Park Headquarters building.

Note: The Whitney programs are not held if the temperature is below 55 or above 95.

The Central Texas Astronomical Society (CTAS) offers monthly stargazing parties just outside Hubbard.   This town is listed on the national Dark Skies website, and as many as 70 people may show up for these events.

You don't need to bring anything, but if you have binoculars or a telescope, by all means bring them.  A small flashlight would be helpful to get from the parking lot to the viewing area nearby and a lawn chair will make upward gazing a little more comfortable.

You may want to arrive in Hubbard early, to see some of the Victorian homes that the town is known for. You can follow our Hillsboro & Hubbard Driving Tour to see these homes, along with antique shops, and a museum with baseball and antique doll exhibits.

CTAS members are on hand at the Star Parties, beginning at sundown, with telescopes and binoculars to highlight your tour of the night sky and to answer questions. You may see things you’ve never seen before, and learn things you’ve never known about the skies at night over Texas.

The CTAS also hosts Observatory Open Houses near Clifton, typically one Saturday each month.

Dates and times subject to change. It is recommended that you confirm these with the event organizer.
