Swimming in Lake Whitney

Swimming pool at Lake Whitney

When it's time to take a break from the summer heat, nothing beats a swim with friends and family. Many of the local lodging facilities have a spacious swimming pool for the young and young-at-heart. Most have adjoining shaded pavilions where you can relax with the latest novel, or take an afternoon siesta.

If instead you'd like to swim in one of the cleanest lakes in Texas, Lake Whitney has an abundance of private and public parks surrounding the lake. Each is different in what it offers, and in the lakeviews that it provides to visitors.

The 955-acre Lake Whitney State Park was named Park of the Month by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in July 2004, and features swimming beaches, boat ramps, and an air strip.

The Corps of Engineers operates a number of parks surrounding the lake. Picnicking, hiking, sandy swimming beaches, and equestrian trails are some of the amenities offered at these parks. Lofers Bend Day Use (off Highway 22, near the dam) and McCown Valley (off 1713, near the Katy Bridge) are the two Corps parks that offer sandy swimming beaches.
